What is Earth Science?
Earth Science is the bridge that connects all natural sciences, including geology, physics, chemistry, biology, math and geography. It is the study of natural systems operating on and in our home planet, as well as out in the solar system. It allows us to explore our planet’s greatest wonders, unlock its past, understand its present, and find pathways to a sustainable future. It enables us to recognize natural hazards and how to manage them, understand relationships between natural and built environments, find and responsibly use Earth’s resources, and help reduce our impact for the benefit of humankind through cooperative discovery and innovation.
Everything around you comes from, or is part of, the Earth:
The device you are using…
(full of Rare Earth Elements)
The building you are in…
(built from Earth materials)
Your transportation today…
(relying on gas or electricity)
The air you are breathing…
(influenced by the atmosphere)
The water from your tap…
(part of the hydrologic cycle)
The food you ate today…
(grown in different soils)
The weather outside…
(affected by local climate)
Your natural environment…
(created over geologic time)
What you don’t always see…
(natural hazards)
…it’s all connected!
To understand our place on this planet, Earth Science allows us to study how natural systems work and how we are connected to them!
